Divergent Declared ‘Most Wanted’ Stateside!
Inevitably compared to another hugely successful franchise in the form of The Hunger Games with its premise centred around futuristic teen ‘warfare’, the film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s bestselling ‘Divergent’ dominated the US Box Office this past weekend.
Dislodging last week’s animated champ ‘Mr Peabody and Sherman’ with ease whom dropped to third place ($11.8 million), the $85 million Neil Burger directed effort scored an impressive $54.6 million in its debut weekend.
It was another great victory for Lionsgate/Summit, who are intent on birthing a new franchise after the popularity of ‘The Twilight Saga’.
Its closest challenger was the latest outing for The Muppets. Unfortunately, the title ‘Most Wanted’ was misleading. Shedding Jason Segel and Amy Adams from the critically acclaimed 2011 revival and installing the likes of Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey, the film had to settle for second place and a $17 million taking. In comparison to its beloved predecessor, it was a sharp decline from the previous’ initial $29.2 domestic haul.
Here’s the rundown in its entirety:
1. Divergent $54.6 million
2. Muppets Most Wanted $17 million
3. Mr Peabody and Sherman $11.8 million
4. God’s Not Dead $9.2 million
5. 300: Rise Of An Empire $8.5 million
6. Need For Speed $7.9 million
7. The Grand Budapest Hotel $6.7 million
8. Non Stop $6.4 million
9. The LEGO Movie $4.1 million
10. Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club $3.1 million
