Amazing Spidey Sequel Swings To The Top!
It was all about the ladies last week, as Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton joined forces to knock ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ off its pedestal. This weekend however, Marvel Studios retaliated and flexed their muscles once more with the return of our friendly neighbourhood Spidey.
Boasting a trio of villains in the form of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and the Green Goblin (Dane Dehaan), the franchise despite an impressive haul is showing small signs of fatigue. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ with director Marc Webb returning alongside stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, soared to the top spot in the US with ease, raking in $92 million.
In comparison with previous outings for the character however, it doesn’t quite hit the standards set by Sam Raimi’s efforts. Whilst a sizeable improvement on its predecessor’s opening weekend ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ ($62 million) and just beating out 2004’s ‘Spider-Man 2’ ($88 million), the sequel falls considerably short of 2002’s ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Spider-Man 3’ ($114 and $151 million respectively).
With no other new releases to fight off, ‘The Other Woman’ had little difficulty securing second place, adding $14.2 million to its domestic tally, as ‘Heaven Is For Real’ completed the top three with $8.7 million.
Here’s the rundown in full:
1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $92 million
2. The Other Woman $14.2 million
3. Heaven Is For Real $8.7 million
4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier $7.7 million
5. Rio 2 $7.6 million
6. Brick Mansions $3.5 million
7. Divergent $2.1 million
8. The Quiet Ones $2 million
9. God’s Not Dead $1.76 million
10. The Grand Budapest Hotel $1.73 million
