A Dog’s Purpose Sequel Begins Shooting, Josh Gad and Dennis Quaid Return
Amblin Partners have announced that shooting has begun on a sequel to 2017’s surprise canine hit A Dog’s Purpose, entitled A Dog’s Journey.
The film, which will be directed by Gail Mancuso, has also added Marg Helgenberger, Betty Gilpin, Kathryn Prescott, and Chinese idol Henry Lau to its cast. The original film was based on the bestselling book of the same name by W Bruce Cameron, who also wrote the follow-up on which A Dog’s Journey will be based. The books, which have been released in 36 countries around the world, follow Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad in the films), a dog who finds joy and meaning in his existence through the lives of the humans he meets along the way.
A Dog’s Purpose was an enormous success in China ($88 million of its $196 million international box office total came from the Middle Kingdom), and as such Alibaba Pictures have jointly-funded the sequel, practically warranting its creation. Gad isn’t the only returning cast member, as Dennis Quaid will also star in the film.
A Dog’s Journey is currently lacking a release date.
