Jolie Beats Mcfarlane in Box Office Shootout!
This weekend with X Men’s superhuman ensemble eager to retain their box office supremacy, two new releases duked it out in the form of Disney’s ‘Maleficent’, a twist on the classic ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and Seth Mcfarlane’s follow-up to Ted, comedic western ‘A Million Ways To Die In The West.
On this occasion, it was Angelina’s vamped-up turn which beat out Mcfarlane’s obscenities Stateside and with considerable ease. In what proved to be the biggest opening weekend for Jolie personally (Kung Fu Panda the previous best with $60.2 million), ‘Maleficent’ conjured up $70 million on its debut to easily take the top spot.
Settling for second place, ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ added $32.6 million to its tally ($162 million as it stands), leaving the latest instalment in a respectable position domestically to beat the series’ current leader ‘The Last Stand’ ($234 million).
As for Family Guy creator Seth Mcfarlane, ‘A Million Ways To Die In The West’ proved a disappointment at both the box office and with critics. Completing the top three and boasting a cast including Charlize Theron, the film only managed $17 million which was a considerable step down on Mcfarlane’s directorial debut (Ted grossing $54 million).
Here’s the rundown in full:
1. Maleficent $70 million

3. A Million Ways To Die In The West $17 million
4. Godzilla $12.2 million

7. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $3.77 million
8. Billion Dollar Arm $3.7 million
