‘Legacy’ Triumphs Proving There’s Life After Bourne!
With Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass fleeing the franchise and leaving it ‘on the ropes’, the pressure was on for Tony Gilroy’s ‘The Bourne Legacy’ to deliver the goods at the box office without its main attraction. This past weekend’s performance Stateside soon extinguished such doubts, after the new installment starring Jeremy Renner nabbed the top spot with $38.1 million.
It easily toppled the original’s (Identity) debut of $27.1 million but fell significantly short when trying to topple the box office debut takings of sequels Supremacy ($52.5 million) and Ultimatum ($69.2 million).
Other new entries first and foremost came in the form of Farrell/Galifanakis’ comedic political faceoff The Campaign, which had to settle for the runner up spot and $26.5 million. The other worthy entry was OAP relations heartwarmer ‘Hope Springs’ starring Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, which placed in fourth ($14.6 million).
The full rundown is as follows:
1. The Bourne Legacy $38.1 million
2. The Campaign $26.5 million
3. The Dark Knight Rises $18.9 million
4. Hope Springs $14.6 million
5. Total Recall $8.01 million
6. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days $8 million
7. Ice Age: Continental Drift $6.3 million
8. Ted $3.2 million
9. Step Up Revolution $2.9 million
10. The Watch $2.2 million
