Lin-Manuel Miranda To Make His Directorial Debut With ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’
He’s the man behind the Broadway smash and now West End winner ‘Hamilton’, who will be warming up his vocal chords again this Christmas for Disney sequel ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ with Emily Blunt.
Now Lin-Manuel Miranda is to switch from centre-stage to behind the camera, with the news that he will be adapting the late Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’ for the screen. Miranda previously starred in an off-Broadway production of Larson’s show, with the latter also behind ‘Rent’ which featured the songs ‘Seasons Of Love’ and ‘Take Me Or Leave Me’.
Set in the year 1990. The story follows New York waiter and aspiring composer Jon, who feels the pressure from his girlfriend Susan as his 30th birthday looms, trying to create the next big American musical in the form of ‘Superbia’. He’s further riddled with doubt thanks to his roommate and fellow creative Michael, who ditches his aspirations for a top advertising job, leaving Jon contemplating whether it’s truly worth pursuing.
‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’ is backed by Imagine Entertainment, with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard producing the project alongside Miranda, with Tony Award winner Steven Levinson (Dear Evan Hansen) developing the script.
Miranda had this to say about the project:
‘Jonathan Larson’s captivating storytelling in Rent first taught me that musicals could be contemporary, true to life, and depict your own experiences. But it was Tick, Tick… Boom! that solidified that drive in me to hone my own voice as a playwright’.
