Kevin Spacey’s Billionaire Boys Club Has Hilarious $618 Opening Weekend
In a delicious case of irony, Kevin Spacey’s Billionaire Boys Club opened to a pathetic $618 when it debuted domestically over the weekend.
Directed by James Cox, the film is a dramatization of the real-life club of the same name, which was a get-rich-quick ponzi scheme in 80’s California that ended with the murder of two people. The project also stars Taron Egerton, Emma Roberts, and Ansel Elgort.
The flick debuted in just eleven cinemas; the only eleven in the entirety of the United States who did not refuse to screen the picture following the multiple allegations of severe sexual misconduct currently faced by actor Kevin Spacey (Superman Returns).
Earlier in the Summer, studio Vertical Entertainment faced a backlash when they announced the film would still be released (shortly after said allegations came to the surface). In a statement, they said: “We hope these distressing allegations pertaining to one person’s behaviour – that were not publicly known when the film was made almost two-and-a-half years ago and from someone who has a small supporting role in Billionaire Boys Club – does not tarnish the release of the film.”
The picture opened to a frankly-embarrassing $126 on its opening day, and will likely be pulled this week. It is entirely without a UK release, with the expectation that it will be quietly released digitally 0n-demand at some point later this year.
